There are so many roles in "IT" that you would have to be more specific. Contracts pay the best rates.

DBAs with a couple of years in Oracle or Microsoft SQL - 35 - 60k

Network admins - 25 - 35k

Support - 20 - 25K

Cisco people - 60k+

Web-designer - 20 - 40k

In the end they're just stats - it's a hard rule to practice but never sell yourself short. Remember the salaries are undercut by the cost of living. Work in London - live somewhere else.
