Working in London?

I want to move to London but need a sponsor to get a visa. Is it possible for me to move there and work as a waitress or something similar while I look for a job and a sponsor?

It depends which country is your home.  If you are American, I don't think you can apply for permanent residency while living in the UK.  US citizens can stay 6 months in the UK without a visa.  However, that would not include a work visa.  You can probably find hotel, bar or restaurant job under the table.
