Everyone has the right to make important decisions regarding their own lives. The Mental Capacity Act states that this should be the starting point.

Working in a person centred manner means giving them choices, providing information and allowing them to make their own decisions (even if you don't think they are good ones!).

There are loads of books on empowerment and service user involvement which are relevent to your question.
