In Universities, there are different grades, starting from Assistant Lecturer, Lecturer, Reader, Ast. Professor, and Professor is the senior most grade.

With that Grade, under the UGC(University Grants Commission, the regulatory body of Indian Universities)guideline, you will get about INR. 40,000/ per month at the senior level.

This is about USD1000/ per month. This is not a big sum, but good enough to have a simpleton life in India.

Try to negotiate with the University to provide you accommodation since the rent of apartment in Major cities is prohibitive.
