Stay at home mom vs working mom?

My daughter is 17 months and i am going back on mat leave in Sept. Now for claiming common law i get so much less money then before. I am finding it hard because my boyfriend and i dont really "share" money he pays half and i pay the other half.

I am making a couple hundrad less every month should i work on my mat leave? i just want to make sure i am stable with my own money but no everything is gone with no money left over for me at all. How do others deal with it?

  1. its better to work and get more money. but if you think u can work and get met leave its not possible

  2. You know that if you go back to work you won't get the mat leave money still right?

  3. Can you find some work to do at home? Is it possible to work for your company from your own home? What about starting up your own website to sell something you love?

    Good luck!

  4. Even if you are common law only, you are still entitled to child support and he should want to support you through your recovery.  I take it you are having a second child in September/October?  If so, you are entitled to your maternity leave.  Check with your company to see if they have any short term disability coverage.  If they do not, your BF needs to provide support for his children both ethically and legally.  You need to rest and give your body a chance to recoup.  Just because you take a few months off does not make you a stay at home parent, it just means you went through pregnancy and childbirth, which both take a toll on your body, and had to take a few months' rest.  If you do not have enough income at all, check into social programs that may assist to fill in the gaps like food stamps, WIC and energy assistance.  Since you will be at home, you can also save money by packing his lunch for work and eating at home, which is also easier to do with a newborn.

  5. I'm not sure you'd want to do this, but can you get state assistance?  Or work something out with your boyfriend instead of going dutch on everything, if he makes more maybe he should pay for more.  Is it his daughter as well?  Or maybe just find a job that allows your boyfriend to work like 4 am to 12 pm, and you work 2pm-10 pm, that way you don't need daycare and can save money.  My sister and bro in law have been doing that for 5 years now, and they save a ton of money on daycare and such they've three kids.  Then they just take 2-3 days every week or every other week off so they have time together as a family.  Also, what helps is if you have a family member watch your daughter while you are at work, one that you trust to help out, or pay little less than daycare.

  6. If you are back at work you will have to pay daycare which can be expensive. But if it is a good facility they take good care of your child go back to work. Save all the money you can and quit when she goes to school. As a baby they need love but as a child they need your guidance. They need help with homwork, someone to talk to about peer pressure and all the outside influences there are. This is the time when their are becoming who they are. In a strange way she will need you more.

  7. What a rotten predicament honey.  I was fortunate to have a husband who provided for me and our kids which is what I always wanted which to be honest with only one wage was a bit of a struggle.  When I went back to work when my kids went to school I realised how much I had missed my profession and the company of my work colleagues.

Its about getting a balance and in this climate money is tight, if you can afford to work parttime try to do that the first five years at least as they fly in and you will miss so much of the best part of parenting.

Dont beat yourself up though at the end of the day you and your partner have to do what is right for your family.  Good luck.
