Question:

Working my way up to running the mile.?

I need to be able to run the mile in around 6 mins for my physical education class. Thats 10mph, for a full mile. Now to some it may seem easy, but I haven't ran in years so I'm out of shape, and out of breath not nearly through the run.

I figured 2 ways to train for it and I want to know which would be better:

I can either run 10 mins a day starting from slower speeds working my way up to 10 mph, or i can run 1 mile a day, starting slower and getting faster.

I third option would be to run as far as I can 10mph each day, but when I don't have set goals I usually don't reach my full potential, so I need a set distance that I can say "only one more minute, or only a quarter mile left"

  1. I would agree mostly with whoever said 3 miles every day. I'm assuming that you have little to no running experience previous (sorry if that seems offensive). Start waking up on Sunday mornings and go for a 20 minute or so run. Try to run the whole way, but if you can't, it's okay to walk a little bit. Sometime later in the week, like Thursday or Friday, run a Tempo run. Run for 5 minutes at your Sunday run pace, then, without stopping, run for 5 minutes as fast as you think you can, then, do 5 more minutes at your Sunday pace. Every other day during the week, try to run 10 to 15 minutes at the same pace (or a little faster) than your Sunday pace. If you do at least 4-5 days a week and put the effort in, I promise you will get that 6 minute mile and maybe even faster! Good Luck! I know you can do it!

  2. Run for a longer distance, such as 3 miles or more, for a few weeks and it will reduce your mile time.

  3. It greatly depends on your age. 6 min/mile pace is VO2max 48, which for people below 20 is average, but once you hit 30, it becomes a big achievement.

As to how you should train depends on your present fitness. You have to post some results so we can see your VO2max. You should also get Jack Daniels' book "Daniels' Running Formula" which details your training program.

  4. i would do a mile. and dont look at the stopwatch until you are done record your time then they next time you run try to get 30 seconds to a minute faster (depending on what your first time was). i think that would be the best way to do it. also try listening to a mp3player/ipod with fast beat songs on it. it makes me run faster when we do our 12minute runs in gym. hope this helps!

  5. Wow, they make you guys REALLY run 0_o

  6. Go with 10 mins and work your way up, why because that way you can also easily see and feel the improved progress you make...

  7. i think you should run 1 mile a day, starting slower and getting faster. do that 5 days. then the other 2 days in the week, run .5 miles going 10mph and then run another .5 miles going at a comfortable speed. hope this helped!
