I am a front row, and am trying to build leg power.

But often after a work out session my head hurts (even if the effort input waslow).

Why is that?

  1. don't put so much presure on your head and breathe in and out

  2. you could just be holding your breath too much, breath and let your blood flow

  3. i used to get headaches doin squats and when i told a guy at the gym about it he said it was because i wasnt exhaling at the completion of the rep and not on the way up. now its fine

  4. If you're mainly working legs, especially when squatting it builds up a lot of internal pressure which shoots your blood pressure up.  This might be the cause of the headache, especially if its an all around headache and not focused in one area.  Try warming up a bit first and working hard on your core (abs and back) at the end of your workout.  If you have good core strength you may not need to brace so much and this might decrease your headache problem.  Another thing to try would be to drop your weight down, perfect your form and breathing, inhale on the way into a motion and breathe out on the way out of it.  You should not be holding your breath at all, you should always breathe, and if you can't then that is a sign you are doing too much weight.  Everyone has to start somewhere, so don't worry about not lifting a lot, just work form first, and then add weight.  If the form isn't there, then you might end up injuring yourself as well, and set yourself even further back.

As far as exercises try this website  [http://www.rugbysmart.co.nz/index.html] for some different exercises, and other tips.  In general, the best workout for leg power is squats to about a 95 degree knee bend.  Also doing dynamic lifts like power cleans, and jerks will help with your point of contact in the scrum.  Don't forget to train the inside and outside of your legs also as they are often neglected and can lead to major injuries (ACL, MCL, etc)

  5. firstly go see a doctor just to make sure everything is fine, and then get a personal trainer so that you get the best and most suitable regime for you!!!! good luck!

  6. I was a prop and had a heart defect that was not diagnosed till I gave up playing.  My blood pressure was 240/120.  Go get it checked!!  Nosebleeds?

  7. thats weird? maybe you should see a doctor or sports consultant? Is your breathing right? Also try swimming 5 or more laps a day build your lung volume and all round workout without much pressure on the legs.
