Question:

Workplace Laws/Safety Regulations? (Canada)?

I was wondering where I can find a list of the laws for workplace conditions. My mom works at a factory and always complains about how they keep it in such a hot environment and other unsafe things. I wanted to know if there are laws that require workplaces to keep the temperature at a certain limit and other things (not only temperature related, but safety related). Please help me! Thank you for your time.

  1. Yes there definitely are laws to stop employers from forcing people to work in unhealthy workplaces. It is covered under your provincial workers compensation board regulations.

Google your provincial government and get on their website. Look for something like Workmans' Compensation or Workers Compensation and click on that. That will take you to their website and you can go from there. You usually contact them by phone or email and it will be confidentially.

It sounds like your mother works in a non union shop. If it is

unionized the union should be doing this for the workers. If not complain to the workers compensation board. I worked in an office over a factory one time and the temperature used to get up to 100 degrees. We secretly called Workers Comp and they sent a guy out who measure the temperatures and forced the management to put in air conditioning. They were

ticked off but couldn't do anything about because it was either that or they would close the office down and the boss

would have had to pay us even though we were working! Good luck to you and your mother. This is why we still need and have unions in Canada!
