World Cup 2010: The 23-Man Rejects Squad
This article has put together the best 23 players in the world not to play in the summer's biggest single-sports event. The national teams featuring in the World Cup 2010 finals in South Africa this summer have announced their provisional squads. Most sides have named 30 players in their national teams, while Brazil coach Dunga declaring his final squad for the mega event set to start in June.
However, there have been some glaring omissions in the big sides. Brazilian legends Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, as well as up and coming star Alexandre Pato, have been not been selected for their national side. Meanwhile Esteban Cambiasso and Javier Zanetti have been overlooked by Argentina coach Diego Armando Maradona. French national team coach Raymond Domenech has controversially left out Karim Benzema, Patrick Vieira and Samir Nasri, while Ruud van Nistelrooy will have to stay at home and watch the Dutch national team fight for the most prestigious trophy in world football after being left out of the squad by Coach Bert van Marwijk.
Here’s a 23-man squad list that is comprised solely of the World Cup rejects. Staying with the spirit, we have decided to 'announce' a total of 28 players in our squad. Please note that the below players are omissions, and not injuries or those who have explicitly rejected call-ups such as Alessandro Nesta.
Believe it or not, the following goalkeepers, will not be featuring in this year’s World Cup; Sebastian Frey from France, Diego Alves of Brazil and Marco Storari from Italy. Defenders including Javier Zanetti from Argentina, Philippe Mexes of France, Alex from Brazil, Argentina’s Ezequiel Garay, Sol Campbell from England and Marcelo of Brazil have also been excluded from the tournament. All these magnificent defenders will not be a part of this great event what so ever.
Midfielders including Jeremy Menez from France, the excellent Samir Nasri also from France, Esteban Cambiasso Juan Riquelme and Ever Banega from Argentina will all miss out on this grand event in South Africa. The spectacular Ronaldinho will also sadly not be a part of his group, along with his Brazilian teammate, Diego. Guti from Spain has also been left out. Forwards players including Karim Benzema from France, Kevin Kuranyi of the Germany squad, Ruud Van Nistelrooy from the Netherlands and Francesco Totti and Antonio Cassano are being left out, along with Pato from Brazil.
Then there is the rest of stand by players that aren’t being included in the lists of soccer stars in the upcoming world cup. Fabrizio Miccoli from Italy, Pedro Leon from Spain, Patrick Vieira and Aly Cissokho from France and Owen Hargreaves of England, will all be left out. It’s a shame for such magnificent players to be left out of the world cup mix who truly could have added much to the flare of the event. This is going to be quite a disappointment for fans that will only be able to imagine their favourite players sitting at their homes watching the world cup, as opposed to being out there in the middle of all the action.
