World Cup: Diego Forlan says that Uruguay are Ready vs Netherlands, Fidel Castro Launches against Referees
The world class Uruguayan forward, Diego Forlan, has claimed that the Celeste are ready for all tests ahead, and will battle against the Netherlands in their semifinal encounter till the final whistle.
Uruguay have won the World Cup two times; once in 1930 and the other in 1950. Now they have a chance to once again lift the ultimate trophy after 60 years. This would also be their first semifinals since the one in 1970.
Forlan has said that it were the Celeste that got the first World Cup proving they are a major football powerhouse, and further proved their dominance in 1950. Forlan also said that he was not underestimating the Dutch side, but reckoned that the Uruguayans were ready to thwart the Netherlands to reach the final.
Talking to the media, the 31 year old striker stated, “Everyone knows Netherlands are a great side with some world class players, especially up front. They are solid at the back too and they are all comfortable on the ball. That makes it an even more difficult game for us”.
For the match, he expressed that the team’s strategy would stay pretty much the same, as it had been working for them so far. He said that the team will keep on doing the things that had gotten them this far in the tournament. He stated that he had respect for all their opponents, and the side wouldn’t be making an exception now. He added that underestimating the other side was a mistake that could not be made at this level in the competition.
He said that the Uruguayan team knew how to play against teams like the Netherlands. He added saying that one has to be ready to face the challenge, whether it’s 90 or 120 minutes, and he knew that his team was definitely ready to face this challenge.
He further stated, “The excitement back home is really fantastic. We know people are getting really caught up in it, especially the youngsters, who’ve never seen Uruguay go this far. And on a personal level I’m thrilled to be bringing so much joy to the Uruguayan people. Let’s just hope we can give them more to cheer about”.
The eminent clash between Uruguay and Netherlands is about to happen, and if the Charruas want to progress to the final, they better have the zeal and enthusiasm they had against the match in Ghana.
Though their qualification was controversial, with a last minute handball by Luis Suarez when he attempted to block a Ghanaian attempt to score a goal, they nevertheless produced an outstanding game. Suarez was sent off the pitch with a red card and Asamoah Gyan took the penalty, which he missed to Suarez’s delight. He hit the top bar and the ball deflected outwards.
Suarez may not be playing in the semifinal, but the match would see the return of a couple of important midfielders of Uruguay. Forlan has said that the match should not be influenced by the referees, as the refereeing factor has been quite dismissive this tournament, with wrong decisions and flawed sightings.
Even the former Cuban President Fidel Castro (a country which shares a continent with Uruguay) has stated that the South American nation (Uruguay) won’t be competing against just the Dutch but against the referees too, who have a biased attitude against South American teams.
While talking to the media, Castro stated, “The vast majority of football fans do not even know what continent Uruguay is in but it seems to me that the referees are biased against the South American sides”.
He further expanded on the issue by giving an example: “It happened when Brazil lost to Holland, when all the decisions went against them and they were sent down to 10 men at a crucial time, which should never have been done”.
The notorious leader expressed that time had changed many things and many facts were forgotten in history. He expressed, “But a final now, between two European countries, will be as colourless and unhistorical as any since the sport was born in the world”.
