World Cup Group C preview: Slovenia vs USA
No-one could have predicted Slovenia would be topping group C after the first round of games but that’s where we stand and a win against the USA will book Slovenia’s place in the second round of the World Cup.
After not the most inspiring game against Algeria in their first match, Slovenia will once again look to adopt a defensive approach against a USA team that is a step up in class over the Algerians.
The 1-0 win over Algeria was Slovenia’s first in a World Cup and could be the confidence boost they need to cause the USA some problems. Zlatko Dedič will continue up front despite not looking his best in the first game, but the one to watch will be Milivoje Novakovič . He’s got a good international record and looked lively in his sides opening game.
Captain Robert Koren scored the all important goal against Algeria, albeit in fortuitous fashion following a goalkeeping blunder by Faouzi Chaouchi, and will have to lead by example if Slovenia stand any chance of making it through to the second round.
Slovenia have no reported injuries and will likely start with the same team that won their first-ever World Cup game.
The USA, too, have no significant injuries following their 1-1 draw against England. The only concern in the squad is goalkeeper Tim Howard who suffered bruised ribs following a collision with England striker Emile Heskey.
The USA looked good against England, thwarting most attacks thrown their way and that could be cause for concern for Slovenia. Not exactly proficient in front of goal, the USA should fancy their chances and with the attack working well against, especially in the air.
Clint Dempsey will have to pull the strings for the United States with coach Bob Bradley admitting the pressure is on.
“The pressure's on and we must win, we’ve been in many of these kind of games before. We are going to have to approach the game in an intelligent fashion,” Bradley said.
