World Cup Group G preview: Brazil v Portugal

Resembling more of a knockout match rather than a group game, Brazil and Portugal go into today’s game knowing they are both pretty much through to the last 16.

The only way Portugal can fail to make the next round is if they lose and the Ivory Coast turnaround a nine-goal deficit. Though the Ivorians play North Korea, it’s still hard to imagine them scoring the required goals, or Portugal letting in enough goals to put themselves in danger of crashing out.

Portugal registered a 0-0 draw against the Ivory Coast in their first game and looked to be out of sorts up front, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s 25-yard strike which hit the post the closest they came to scoring.

That problem was quickly rectified against North Korea where they handed the Korean’s a 7-0 hammering, not even Brazil managed that, all they could muster was a narrow 2-1 win.

If there any doubts about how Portugal will approach today’s game manager Carlos Queiroz is eager for his team to play the best they can.

“We don't want the Brazilians to score past us this time - it is a question of honour," said Queiroz.

If it’s a question of honour then it should be a good game and a win for Portugal would secure them top spot. First place is a big prize in group G as the runners up could face a tie against European Champions Spain, a prospect no-one will be looking forward to.

Brazil midfield maestro Kaká is not taking anything for granted despite being banned for the game after being sent off against the Ivory Coast.

“This final group game is important for us to finish first. A draw would also be good but a win would give us the strength to go into the knock-out round really motivated,” Kaká said.

“Portugal is one of the teams we have faced more times in recent years. We thrashed them in Brasilia [6-2] and we lost against them in London 2-0.”

With Kaka out, Julio Baptista could come into midfield, while Robinho could be moved into a more central position. Elano could be rested after being stretchered off against the Ivory Coast , while Nilmar could start up front for The Seleção.

Portugal didn’t pick up any new injuries or suspensions against North Korea, but do still have a worry over their Brazilian born playmaker Deco, who is suffering from a hip problem
