World Cup winning coach Gary Kirsten contacted by Cricket South Africa for coaching role
India’s coach and former South Africa opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527 has said that he has been approached by Cricket South Africa to take over the vacant slot of head coach for the national team.
The Proteas coach Corrie van Zyl has left the job after the unsuccessful ICC World Cup 2011 campaign.
India won the ICC World Cup 2011 last week under the coaching of Kirsten. However, he is quitting the job as he had decided long ago that he would spend time with his family after the World Cup.
Kirsten said that the South African officials have contacted him but he refused to make any kind of a decision because he needs rest and wants to absorb the excitement of winning the World Cup first.
The former South African cricketer said, “They [South Africa] have approached me but I've said I'm not going to make any decisions just yet. I need to take some time off and clear my mind for a while after this magnificent journey.”
Kirsten, who usually avoids the limelight, gave the credit of the World Cup glory to the Indian players and said that at the end of the day it is up to the players to perform in the middle and handle the pressure of international cricket.
“We've had incredible support but for me the credit goes to the players. They have handled huge expectation and pressure, they have worked really hard, prepared really well and, when they have needed to make the big contributions under pressure, they have
done that,” the former Proteas opener added.
