World Football News: Chelsea scrape past MSK Zilina as Rooney dismisses transfer speculation
Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda became the heroes at Stamford Bridge last night, as Chelsea overturned a one goal deficit from the first half of their encounter against Zilina into a 2-1 win in the second half of the match. Bello had surprised the home
side with his 19th minute goal which gave Zilina the lead but Chelsea rallied back in the second half to confirm their progression to the round of sixteen of the UEFA Champions League.
Ancelotti spoke about his team’s comeback in his post-match notes, as he said, "It was a difficult game because we didn't start the game well, were 1-0 down. We had a good reaction in the second half, with more intensity and good play, and plenty of opportunities
to score. The second half was very good. But if we play like we did in the first half, it's impossible to win the Champions League. If we play like we did in the second then we'll have a chance."
The Italian manager expressed his disappointment on Chelsea’s first half performances as he stated, "I was upset because we didn't play well. We were not playing well. We changed something in the second half, changed the intensity of play. This was the difference.
We'd played too slow in the first half and gave them the opportunity to control their defensive position.
He added, “I just wanted to play with a different system, with two wingers with Daniel Sturridge and Didier Drogba in the middle. For this reason I took out Kakuta. I was disappointed because this was an important game and an important moment. We wanted
to win and finish first in the group. But we didn't play in that first half. We had no intensity or tempo. We changed things immediately in that second half and our behavior changed”
Chelsea confirmed their place in the last 16 teams of the UEFA Champions League after their win against Zilina, as Carlo Ancelotti went onto say, "It was important to win and move on quickly. To look at the performance in the second half. Also, for the young
players, it was a good experience. They played well, generally, and put in good performances for the team. I think Josh McEachran can play every game.”
Chelsea’s manager concluded by stating that, “He (McEachran) showed his quality. He was good defensively, won a lot of tackles. And, obviously, with the ball he's fantastic. He can play it short or long without problem. He played with personality and I'm
happy with his performance. He has to grow, he has to improve, but he's ready to play."
On the other hand, Zilina’s coach Pavel Hapal wasn’t happy at all with the eventual outcome of the match as his team were disappointing at the end of the first half. Hapal said, "We are really disappointed because our boys fought for 90 minutes and we were
hoping we were going home with one point. But luck was not on our side. We had very good chances and while it was a big slap in our face to lose 7-0 to Marseille in the last round, we just did not have luck on our side tonight.”
Alternatively, Manchester United’s star striker has come out and expressed his thoughts on signing a new contract at Old Trafford for the first time since he came back from his ankle injury. Rooney also rubbished rumours that suggested that he only signed
the new contract so that United can get a higher price when he eventually parts ways with the club.
Rooney told MUTV, Manchester United’s official television channel, "I read that I have agreed a new deal so that the club can agree a higher price with a different team somewhere down the line. It is a load of rubbish. I signed a new deal to stay here for
the long-term future with Manchester United. I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about the reaction from the fans. I can understand their frustrations with the contract negotiations. It happened in the public eye, which made it difficult, and I did
make the club aware of my concerns. But I always made it aware I wanted to be at this club and I am delighted my future is at United."
