  1. Find out the economic situations. It should help.

  2. It is a real shame that you are being asked to do a problem like this without access to books. no class handouts or other materials either?  Not good. Can you get to a library at all?

Look up Mexico and the countries of South America on Wikipedia.  You will get a lot of good information there.

  3. I don't want to tell you the answer outright but will give you some ideas as to what to look at and think about. After reading the next paragraph you might have some ideas and will be able to run a google search to get more resources for yourself.

Take a look at 2 very important factors that will contribute to settlement patterns, topography and climate. People originally settle in an area for a certain reason. Check out the topography (landform map) of Mexico. Where are the mountains? Where are the active volcanoes? Where are the deserts?  Is the coastal area wide enough to sustain population. With mountains, can goods travel easily through them to get from one side of the country to the other? Where will the climate be the best for people to settle. Mexico is hot as you know. Will people settle where it is the hottest and the most humid or look for a more moderate climate? Where is this moderate climate? Mexocp is a country full of mountains!! Think maybe mining. Settlements would original grow near the mountains. Any land relatively flat for settlements but close to mining? Flat areas needed for agriculture - farming to feed miners etc. Where would the farms be located with reference to the landforms and climate?

Now, you take over form here ...
