  1. The World Heritage List is a compilation of sites from around the world that are deemed to be of significant natural or cultural importance.

    If by applied, you mean how is a site chosen? If so, the country where the site is located must nominate it by making a list of why it should be considered.

    The benefits of having your site chosen, be it the Great Barrier Reef or Notre-Dame Cathedral, is that you are eligible to receive funds for the preservation of the site. It also gives you bragging rights of a sort, be it for obtaining other monetary grants or for attracting tourists. Which in turn helps the economy of the region.
