Question:

World Hunger.. should we care?

Do you honestly care about the hungry people of the world?

I'm doing a project on this and it seems the more I do research, many people subsequently don't care. So, do you?

I do care, but I think that the more we try to help, the more money we give.. nothing seems to change. The money that we give to these third-world dictators goes to help make their "kingdoms" larger. How do we know that the money we donate actually goes to help these people?

  1. Yes.

Many donate to the well-known organisations for them to do what they can  in areas of famine and unstable food supply.

What I find sad is that there is enough food in the world to feed everyone - also, the food that is thrown away in the US alone would freed everyone in the African sub-Sahara, central and horn regions.

Your point is well made about dictators. The answer is to give food and medicines directly to the places where they are needed. Unfortunately, the governments of many countries will not allow that to happen and insist that their own internal organisations distribute the food or whatever. Hence the majority doesn't get to the people who need it.

Western governments need to put pressure on these dictators. That is the theory - Mugabe in Zimbabwe would just laugh. But one should try.

I have taken lots of aid to people in bad situations over the years. It is easy to have a negative view. However, that all changes once you actually see the people in need. It is a stunning and emotional experience seeing people too weak to even crawl. When you see thousands of them with nothing your heart goes out to them and you can't believe that man could do that to fellow man.

It really isn't their fault that they have a dictator (they surely didn't vote these people in) and then find that the dictator is a tyrant.

Things are and do change. We are too far away from it, but the people who work in the field for and with the well-known organisations haven't given up. They can see that without their help the death toll would be greater.

So, the final answer is: yes, we should care and yes we should continue to try. OK, so some of the aid goes to ruthless people, dictators or henchmen, but at least some gets through to the victims of starvation.

Just think, the cost of just one Big Mac would feed a person in Ethiopia for a week! Just how difficult is it to help these people?

And, please, please, don't talk about looking after your own first. Who said anything about not helping them - but I'd be interested to know what the people who talk loudest about "looking after their own" are actually doing to help "their own"! But that is another thing.

What we are talking about is people who are starving to death - we should all help them.

  2. Thats my whole passion " helping the poors in the world" I have always been wanting to start a buienss to produce more money then go to poors in thrid world and help them personally. But im stuck on my 9-5 job. no money to start using my talent and produce money to help other. I feel stuck. And you are right when big chunk given to big leader it makers there rich palaces more rich. not even one tenth goes to poor. I would like help myself and source where i csan fulfill my dream of helping people poors in the world.

  3. nope, not one bit

  4. I care a lot, but I agree with you that it is important to donate to organizations that are actually making a difference.

  5. I just ate two donuts.  So I'm all set.

  6. caring about anything does nothing to solve the problem in and of itself unless people are actually willing to do something about it.

Other than natural famines, most world hunger is manmade, as take for instance, all these food shipments you hear America sends over seas to third world nations, what does not end up on the black market, sometimes is left to rot on the shipping docks.

Take for instance this one war that was taking place in Africa while I was attending college, since neither side could get the food all for themselves, the food sat there & rotted so no one got any from that shipment, which was rather large.

Hunger is more political than natural these days, and the sad fact is that it can also be used a weapon also.

  7. Sure I care, but our governments should not be spending American tax dollars outside this country.  The US government has a role to play and that is protecting and defending the citizens of the United States.  As it stands their are many area's where our government is lacking.  Until our budget is balanced, all of our own programs are running properly and our military is fully funded and operating at full strength we shouldn't consider helping anyone else.  If you couldn't make your monthly house payment, would you hand over your weekly paycheck in an attempt at helping someone else make a house payment that they are struggling with?  No of course not, that would be absurd.  The people who are starving, have governments which are supposed to look out for them.  These governments are corrupt and I feel they are abusing their citizens.  When we send aid to these people, they no longer have a reason to rise up and take these corrupt governments out.  In effect, we are actually making their situation worse in the long run.

  8. I care about people being hungry, but think its repulsing to give other countries are help for fighting hungry when we have so many homeless an hungry in our own country, and most of them seem to be be vets....why is that
