World Ice Hockey Championships: Slovakia overpowers Team USA 4-2 in crucial tie-NHL News
Team USA seem to have succumbed to complacency after winning first two games in the World Ice Hockey Championship, as they lost their third game, 2-4, against Slovakia, on Monday, May 07, 2012.
It was first win of the championships for Slovakia that lost its first two games of the tournament.
Slovakia opened its championship campaign with a loss to Team Canada that went on to lose its second game against the rivals, the US.
The US-Slovakia game was opened with a goal by Slovakia into 47th second and later they scored another goal to extend the lead to two goals.
However, Justin Faulk, who represents the Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League (NHL), scored a goal into 16th minute to reduce the deficit to one goal.
Interestingly, the US overpowered Canada in the second game of the tournament. So, each team’s position on the points table has been consolidating regularly.
Meanwhile, Team Canada, in its game on Monday, comfortably beat France, 7-2.
Earlier, Team USA had also defeated France with the same score of 7-2 in the opening game of the tournament.
Team USA had also surprised Canada on Saturday, May 05, when they at one of rare occasions beat their rivals from across the border.
All sides in the group have more games to go so the final standing on the points table is difficult to project at present, especially when results have reflected on the development of some of unexpected situations.
The event, which is next to the Olympics in stature, is being held in Sweden and Finland, featuring 16 ice hockey teams from Europe. The US, Russia and Canada are other teams competing for a gold medal in the tournament.
Team Canada has great chances of winning the tournament. However, upsets cannot be ruled out, as Russia, Team USA and others are well capable of climbing on the winning stage anytime, anywhere.
