World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki Wins Rogers Cup
The illustrious Women’s Rogers Cup 2010 began in Montreal on Monday. Unfortunately, rain delayed the tournament’s opening matches leading to the disappointment of many fans. The final match was pushed back a day after heavy rains washed out play over the weekend.
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki won the tournament after knocking down Russia’s Vera Zvonareva in the final with a total of two sets. The score remained 6-3, 6-2. Caroline, while leading by 5-3 during the first set fell behind 0-40. However, she responded strongly with five straight points to finish off the set and later quickly concluding the match in the second set by winning four straight sets on her serve. Caroline received the champion’s prize money of $350,000 while Zvonareva was given $175,000.
Wozniacki is currently number two in the women’s world tennis rankings and is also expected to win the title at Flushing Meadows in New York after the top ranked Williams announced her withdrawal from the tournament. Caroline has also won several junior tournaments including the 2006 Wimbledon girls’ singles and 2005 Orange Bowl Tennis Championship. She made her debut in 2005 during the Sony Ericson WTA tour at Cincinnati’s Western and Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, although losing there to the later tournament champion Patty Schnyder in the first round. The 20-year-old has won nine career titles and also remained runner up at the 2009 U.S Open.
On the other hand, Zvonareva, a grass court grand slam finalist clearly didn’t play her natural game in the final. The eight-seed on certain occasions let out shrieks after missing some routine shots. Caroline’s ground strokes were astonishing that hit the lines with their normal sharpness. This was her third trophy of the season after earlier victories at Ponte, Vedra Beach and Copenhagen. Caroline, while commenting on her victory said, “I exactly played the way I wanted to. This win will help me a lot in playing even better during the final major as it is a real confidence booster; it’s definitely not a small tournament for me”.
Caroline’s victory at the Women’s Rogers Cup 2010 has proven that she is one of the tennis world’s finest players and would surely be a good competitor during the upcoming U.S Open.
