World Series television ratings at record low – MLB Update
It looks like Fox Sports dominated the weekly television ratings with their World Series coverage, according to a leading sports website. Fox’s competitors did not have a sporting chance against its post season broadcasts despite the fact San Francisco Giants’
4-0 series victory over the Detroit Tigers brought in a record low World Series ratings.
Tigers’ had swept the New York Yankees 4-0 comprehensively in the best of seven match American League Championship Series. Everybody expected them to give Giants a run for their money but that did not turn out to be the case.
However, despite the World Series ending in just four games, the viewership was enough to put Fox Sports at the top of last week’s ratings according to the figures released by Nielsen Co. on Tuesday. CBS was also very close behind based on the popularity
of its top rated series NCIS, the source further claimed.
The World Series, also known as the fall classic, attracted just 12.7 million viewers, which was the lowest audience since Nielsen began to measure with People Meters back in 1987. Not too many Tigers’ fans would have bothered to see their team in action
after the Tigers were humiliated by the Giants in first two games.
''It's important for us to remain focused on the series relative to today's competitive environment rather than bygone years,'' Fox Sports Media Group executive Michael Mulvihill said.
"The World Series has been a top-10 prime-time hit for over 40 years, and even with a four-game sweep, this series was no exception," he added. "This World Series gave us exactly what we expected: a top-10 show among all viewers and a top-five show among
hard-to-reach younger men. It's important for us to remain focused on the Series relative to today's competitive environment rather than bygone years."
The ratings for the next few weeks are expected to be influenced by the massive Sandy storm and the destruction it has caused all across the country. Major League Baseball officials will be slightly worried with the numbers released by Nielsen. It will be
exciting to see if the World Series finals prove to be more competitive in the next season.
