World Series title is all I want, says Mike Ilitch – MLB Detroit Tigers News
Detroit Tigers’ owner Mike Ilitch will be an extremely satisfied man. Ilitch will be impressed with what he has seen from the Tigers this season. Nobody expected his team to dominate the post-season the way that they have.
After securing the American League pennant and the World Series berth, Ilitch spoke briefly about how he is feeling. He thanked the fans for supporting the Tigers throughout the season. He also shared jokes with Manager Jim Leyland.
"He's told me all along, if there's one thing he'd really love to have, it would be that World Series ring," General Manager Dave Dombrowski said. "We had that conversation 11 years ago when I joined the franchise, and hopefully we can get that for him.
I've never seen a man more dedicated to a community than him. What he's done for the franchise, for the city, he's always there to give us whatever we need, whatever we want."
"I don't worry about the investment, I want to win," he said in Leyland's office in Kansas City. "That's all I want to do is win.”
Late in the evening, Ilitch moved away from the lights and the celebratory roar and preferred to sit in a golf cart with his family members. He posed for pictures for a short while and then disappeared into the right field tunnel.
At 83-years-old, Ilitch is in the twilight of his life but there is one force that is driving him. He has a dream that desperately needs to be fulfilled. A World Series title is what Ilitch is thinking of every night and day.
Tigers nearly achieved it in 2006 when they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. The quest for the crown had grown more urgent. This year, the Tigers have their best chance of making their dreams come true.
The way they dismantled the night New York Yankees in the best of seven games American League Championship Series is a clear indication of the comfort level they are feeling right now. With Justin Verlander starting two of the seven games in World Series,
the NLCS winners will have a mountain to climb against the Tigers.
