World Snooker Champion crashes out of the China Open 2011 – Snooker news
Many snooker fans do not know or remember that all ranking tournaments of the 2010/2011 season have been played with two world snooker champions. Current World Snooker Champion, Neil Robertson of Australia and World Ladies Snooker Champion, Reanne Evans,
both have been present in all ranking tournaments of the current season. Unfortunately, the latter could not make it to the televised stages of the season’s ranking tournaments.
Reanne Evans was awarded a wild card by the World Snooker chief, Barry Hearn at the end of the 2009/2010 season by the World Professional Billiard and Snooker Association (WPBSA). The move also enables her to participate in the qualifiers of all men’s ranking
tournaments of the 2010/2011 season. So far, she has participated in 16 matches but unfortunately she could not win any of them.
Evans, the current World Number One and a record 6-time consecutive World Ladies Championship winner, lost her first qualifiers round match of Welsh Open 2011 to Ireland’s Michael Judge 4-1. In the German Masters 2011 qualifiers, she was beaten by England’s
Nigel Bond 5-0. In yesterday’s first round of China Open qualifiers, she faced another defeat from the hands of England’s Ben Woollaston 5-1 at the World Snooker Academy, Sheffield.
The Dudley-based 25-year-old Evans, a record holder of 80 consecutive match wins, stunned Woollaston winning the first frame 17-82 with a fine half-century clearing of 50 to take a 0-1 lead. Unfortunately, she was unable to continue her winning streak as
the 23-year-old Englishman, Woollaston, snatched back to back five frames.
The second frame took a while as Evans, winner of 27 World Ladies Billiard and Snooker Association (WLBSA) ranking titles, gave away a few foul shots giving the Englishman 25 points. Woollaston added his own break of 44 to clinch the frame 84-9. He took
the third frame 67-26 followed by a firing century break of 130 in the 4th frame to grab it 138-0 and take a 3-1 lead in the qualifier.
Woollaston, the 2006 European under-19 champion, swept the next two frames 60-27 and 71-37 respectively and defeated current World Ladies Snooker champion 5-1. The frame scores of the match are 17-82, 84-9, 67-26, 138-0, 60-27 and 71-37.
Reanne Evans, ex-partner of Irish cueman Mark Allen, will participate in world championship qualifiers too starting from March 3. The tournament will be held at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield from April 16 to May 2. Evans just earned her 27th
WLBSA ranking title winning the Southern Classic when she beat Maria Catalano 5-1 in the final. She has also defeated World Number One and current Welsh Open champion, John Higgins 4-3 in the six-red championship that was organised in Ireland.
