World Snooker announces draw for 2011 Snooker World Cup in Bangkok - Snooker news
Snooker’s governing body, World Snooker, announced the draw for the upcoming mega team-event of the 2011 World Cup Snooker in Thailand on Monday, June 13.
The tournament will be running from July 11-17 at the World Trade Centre in Bangkok and is set to feature 20 teams, which will represent 19 countries.
The 20 teams have been divided into four groups with five countries each. The 2011 Snooker World Cup is a two-man team event and Thailand, as a host country, will have the liberty to play with two teams in the tournament.
Group A includes Wales, Egypt, Pakistan, Germany and Ireland, while Group B will comprise of China, Thailand (one), UAE, Malta and Australia. England, Brazil, India, Belgium and Northern Ireland will battle to top Group C, while the second team of Thailand
will be in Group D along with Scotland, Afghanistan, Poland and Hong Kong.
The tournament will be played according to the round-robin format of play with an all-play-all basis, as each member of a team will go against every player of the other squad. The top two teams from each group will move into the quarter-final stage of the
event.
Thailand’s energy company, ETT, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, EGAT, are the sponsors of the 2011 Snooker World Cup.
The top-eight seeded countries are Wales, Scotland, England, China, Australia, Northern Ireland, Hong Kong and Republic of Ireland. The players that will represent these countries are as follows.
Wales - Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens
Scotland - John Higgins and Stephen Maguire
England - Mark Selby and Ali Carter
China - Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo
Australia - Neil Robertson and Steve Mifsud
Northern Ireland - Mark Allen and Gerard Greene
Hong Kong - Marco Fu and Fung Kwok Wai
Republic of Ireland - Ken Doherty and Fergal O'Brien
Thailand will contest in the event with two teams. Thailand A comprises of James Wattana and Dechawat Poomjaeng, while Thailand B will go with Passakorn Sunwannawat and Thepchaiya Un-nooh.
The Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) have already announced National Champion, Shahid Aftab and the former Asian Champion, Muhammad Sajjad, as their entrants for the tournament.
Germany and Brazil, on the other hand, have got wild card entries in the event. Germany will play with Patrick Einsle and Lasse Münstermann, while Brazil’s team will feature Itaro Santos, along with a second player which is yet to be decided.
