World Snooker announces new roll-over prize for maximum break: 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Snooker's governing body, World Snooker has announced a new roll-over prize for hitting maximum break of 147 during a televised match. According to the new system, a £5,000 prize will be awarded to the player who scores a maximum 147 during the televised
stages of a ranking event. The new roll-over prize system will be effective from this week’s 2011 Australian Goldfields Open.
The organisation told the media on Tuesday, July 19 that the new system of maximum break prize will make things very interesting. The maximum break reward is valid for a 147 scored in televised stages of a ranking tournament only. If the maximum break is
not potted in that event, the prize will be accumulated into the next ranking event’s final stages and so on until it is won.
World Snooker stated in a press release, “A £5,000 prize will be available for a televised 147 made in the final stages of all major ranking events. If a 147 is not made in an event, the prize will roll over to the next televised ranking event and will continue
to accumulate until it is won.”
The prize will be shared if more than two players succeed to pocket the maximum clearance. This new system will be operative immediately in the already running ranking event of 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. As far as Players Tour Championships (PTC) and
non-televised matches of ranking events are concerned, there will be an additional £500 prize for maximum break.
While speaking to local media, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) chairman, Jason Ferguson said, “It is well acknowledged that a 147 is always a special moment in our sport. A lot of players felt that the prize should be reinstated
and I'm pleased that we have been able to achieve this. It's a new and exciting system for the 147 prize and could make things very interesting if it rolls over for five or six tournaments.”
Many players wanted the maximum break prize reinstated so this new decision from World Snooker will surely bring good news to those professionals.
