World Snooker bans Joe Jogia following suspicious betting probe – Snooker News
Following the investigation of the suspicious betting on the match between Joe Jogia and Matthew Selt, World Snooker has banned Jogia for two years. After the end of the hearing, World Snooker found out that the doubtful betting was made against Jogia’s
defeat.
According to the investigation, 14 bets were placed that valued £4,830. Jogia was unable to provide any explanation on the accusations as World Snooker banned him for two years.
In its statement, World Snooker said, “An investigation was conducted by the WPBSA which found that on and between 20th and 24th January 2012, a total of 19 bets were made or attempted, all at different betting shops in the Leicester area on Matthew Selt
winning this match against Joe Jogia. 14 bets to a total value of £4,830 were placed.”
World Number 47, England’s Joe Jogia was up against compatriot Matthew Selt in the 2012 Snooker Shootout but before he could play his match, he pulled out of the tournament. Later, the snooker governing body, World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association
(WPBSA) received reports about some suspicious betting patterns on the match between the two.
The bookies reported that there were a large number of small bets placed on the match between the two. According to the initial reports, these small bets were placed on Jogia’s defeat which made the actions of Jogia suspicious when he pulled out of the event.
The WPBSA launched an inquiry on that issue last month and Jogia was suspended from the professional circuit.
Recently the WPBSA disciplinary committee completed their investigation and they resumed the hearing on the case. The committee found that there was a series of small bets placed on the Englishman’s defeat. Following the suspicious betting, Jogia withdrew
from the game because of an injury and the game was not played.
It will be interesting to see how World Snooker cleans up this betting mess as the reputation of the organization and the players are all at stake. The fans will be looking to the new season which is hopefully free from scandal and allegations as the WPBSA
seem serious to look into the rumours and investigate accordingly.
