World Snooker launches new International Snooker Championship in China
Snooker governing body, World Snooker is determined to promote the game across the world and in order to achieve this goal the association has taken many initiatives so far.
After the current World Snooker Chairman, Barry Hearn, joined the organisation in 2009, the sport has earned a lot of appreciation and respect around the world. Hearn made great reforms in the basic structure of the snooker events and the main calendar of
the game.
There were six snooker events in a snooker calendar before Hearn was appointed as the chairman but now, there are more than 30 major and minor snooker events in a snooker season. Hearn’s drastic steps have played an important role in promoting the game across
the globe.
As an addition to the services around the globe, World Snooker has added another major ranking snooker tournament in the calendar.
This new event will be staged in China and is titled as the International Snooker Championship. The event will be the biggest snooker gathering in Asian continent with a total of £600,000 prize money.
The International Snooker Championship has the biggest prize money in Asia and will bear equal ranking points as the UK Championship. According to the agreement between World Snooker and CCTV Sports & Entertainment Co Ltd, this major ranking snooker tournament
will be a part of the calendar for the next five years.
While speaking to World Snooker, Hearn said, “We are absolutely delighted to announce this fantastic new event, alongside CCTV Sports & Entertainment Co Ltd, a great partner with vast experience in television broadcast and events. Last season there were
two ranking events in China, next season there will be five.”
The snooker chief added, “The International Championship will be an outstanding addition to the calendar and will take snooker into a city which has never staged a professional event before, which will help the sport continue to grow in China.”
The event will gather world’s top 32 potters from around the world who will battle for another glory that equals the second most prestigious snooker event, the UK Championship. The new event is sure to make a positive impact on the snooker calendar for both
the fans and players as well.
