World Snooker ranking: Stuart Bingham jumps to number 12 – 2011 Australian Goldfields Open
Snooker governing body, World Snooker has announced a two-year rolling list of World Snooker Rankings after 2011 Australian Goldfields Open. According to the new list, the Australian event winner, Stuart Bingham of England has jumped up to the number 12th
spot in the rankings. The Englishman played brilliantly in the Aussie tournament and rightfully earned this achievement.
Bingham had a tremendous run in the tournament where he entered as a qualifier and played his first match against China’s Ding Junhui. Bingham defeated the world number four convincingly, to set up a clash with Tom Ford.
Beating compatriot Ford easily by a score of 5-0, brought him into the quarter-finals against world number 13, Mark Allen. Allen did give him a tough time but it was Bingham who stood firm in the end and clinched the match 5-3.
Allen next faced former world snooker champion, Shaun Murphy, in the semi-final stage. The semi-final clash was a one-sided affair and the spectators saw Murphy fall against Bingham 6-2. The defeat must have been a shock for Murphy but it was a great achievement
for Bingham, as he surged into his first ever ranking event final against Mark Williams.
Facing the former UK Championship winner and world number one, Mark Williams, in the final was itself a challenge for the 35-year-old Bingham. He played brilliantly against the Welsh Potting Machine to win the title in a decider frame, 9-8.
With this sensational victory, Bingham not only grabbed the first ranking title of his snooker career, but also made an entrance in the world’s Top 16 snooker stars. He promoted himself three places from number 15 and seems pretty confident to earn a few
more places.
