World snooker’s big guns dominate at Bangkok Convention Centre: 2011 Snooker World Cup
It wasn't surprising to see all big guns of snooker including Mark Selby, Ali Carter, Mark Williams, John Higgins, Matthew Stevens, Stephen Maguire and Neil Robertson, dominating their respective groups in the first two days.
Wales is drawn against Ireland, Pakistan, Egypt and Germany in Group A. So far Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens have played only one match against Egypt where they whitewashed Wael Talat and Yasser El-Sherbini 5-0. Both Welshmen completely dominated the
Egyptians in their opening match and topped their group.
Australia’s Neil Robertson and Steve Mifsud are on top of their group with two match victories in group matches. They defeated Thailand’s James Wattana and Dechawat Poomjaeng in the first match by 4-1, followed by a close victory over Tony Drago and Alex
Borg from Malta, by the scoreline of 3-2. Australia is now leading Group B with seven points.
The Wuxi Classic Champion Mark Selby, and former world snooker champion Ali Carter, are rattling their opponents impressively in the group stage. They have earned four points after winning their opening match against Brazil’s Fabio Luersen and Noel Rodrigues,
4-1. The Englishmen will next meet Belgium on Wednesday, July 13 at Bangkok Convention Centre.
After winning their first match of 2011 Snooker World Cup, Selby spoke to the local reporters, “It's massively important to start with a win and if you look at our group ourselves and Northern Ireland are the toughest teams so as we have the three other
teams first we need some convincing wins.”
Selby’s partner, Carter added, “It's a very short format and anything can happen so even if you lose a point then you can't crucify yourself.”
Scotsmen, reigning world snooker champion John Higgins and Stephen Maguire are also playing well in the tournament. Despite facing tough resistance by Poland in their opening match, both cuemen managed to get the better of their opponents and eventually
win the match.
The Scottish pair met Afghanistan’s Saleh Mohammad and Mohammad Rais Senzahi in their second encounter and beat them by a convincing 4-1 score, to lead Group D with seven points.
