World T20 2012 in Sri Lanka - the Emerald Isle and its many marvels - Part 1 - Opinion
The warm beaches, the magnificent Indian Ocean and the bustling life of Colombo, are just a taste of what the Emerald Isle known as ‘Sri Lanka’, has to offer for tourists, expatriates and cricket players alike. For the 12 teams which would be contesting
in the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 World T20 of 2012 on the shores of this magnificent country, there are plenty of places to explore.
The tournament begins on September 18, and it will be characterized by tumbling wickets, massive sixes and breathtaking catches, being taken by an array of top quality players. The rare breather in a tight schedule would be a welcoming prospect for most
teams after they take part in a 3-hour cricket fiesta.
The rare opportunity to explore one of the most beautiful countries on the planet is something that most players would not want to miss. For the teams which are based in Colombo, a night out at the Galle Face Green, which is in close proximity to the Sri
Lankan World Trade Center and the magnificent Indian Ocean, will be exactly what the doctor would order after embracing the field. The Galle Face Green is one of the many attractions in Colombo and a popular hangout spot for those who wish to be next to the
ocean. In addition, numerous cafes, restaurants and clubs are dotted across the capital. For those with a keen interest of tasting continental food or going through an array of top quality souvenir shops, Colombo is definitely the place to be. The city also
provides a unique sense of perspective for cricketers as well. The peaceful coexistence of many ethnic groups, the secular nature of the capital, and the numerous religious buildings such as the Jami ul Alfar Mosque in Pettah, would provide a distinct flavor
of South Asian society, which has historically been torn apart on religious and ethnic lines.
Other places in Colombo, such as the Majestic City and Barefoot, are also popular places for many tourists. Barefoot is one of the best antique shops in South Asia, and provides an array of top quality souvenirs, toys, linen cloths and books. For those who
hail from countries such as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749, this shop, which is located in the heart of the city, is bound to captivate one to the point of being overawed by Sri Lankan culture.
For shopping fanatics however, the Majestic City is undoubtedly the best place in the city to dig in. The aborted 2006 triangular series that was to be held between hosts http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757, would have ultimately seen the latter explore through
this shopping complex had it not been for a terrorist attack in the city. The mall has thousands of stores which provide everything ranging from sporting merchandise to Buddha statues. The variety of goods and services available at the MC has made it one of
the pioneer stores in Sri Lanka, which many cricketers would not want to miss. Furthermore, the fashion hub of ODEL in the city would cater to those who have a unique sense of style and taste.
