World Thoroughbred Rankings history and origination
Thoroughbred is basically racing horse, considered as hot blood horse, they are best known for their speed, alertness and swiftness. The concept of this type of horses was originated from England back in 18th and 19th century.
The native mares were crossbreed, with imported stallions related, to Arab, Barb and Turkoman. While considering a thoroughbred, the pedigree is a very important factor that is always kept in mind.
In 18th and 19th century owners of thoroughbred started importing them, to different countries for the purpose of race and crossbreeding.
These bloodhorses are not only used for racing purpose, but in numerous other sports or riding discipline like, fox hunting, show jumping, dressage polo and combined training.
According to the performance of the bloodhorses they are ranked, these rankings are in accordance to the merit, which is assessed by the best act of the horse in a specific race.
International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA), are the ones who compiles the results of the horses with their ranks. The federation came into being in 2003, its headquarter is in Paris France.
Members of the federation are from all around the world, they are the ones who evaluate every horse, with its top performance and place the horse in a specific rank.
The first World Thoroughbred ranking was held in 1977, on behalf of the European Pattern Committee in which Ireland, Great Britain and France published the racing merit, under the banner of International Classification.
Gradually other countries also started joining the federation, Italy and Germany became a part in 1985, following America Canada and the in 1990’s, Japan decided to join the organization.
Handicappers who under took the end of season assessment since 2004, publish the ranks twice a year. The publication which takes place in January, which consists of horses aged three or above, the assessment is done related to their races or training.
The assessment is usually done at the end of the year, the ranks includes those horses which are at 115, or above the rating of 115. By this procedure of thoroughbred ranking, it has become really convenient to select a horse for quality breeding purpose.
The hierarchy of the whole organization, starts from the top most level of General Assembly annual Council, which consists of 59 members. Executive Council with a chairman three ARF, Americas and Europe and 2 Rotating Members come under, General Assembly
Annual Council.
In executive office there are three Vice Chairman in the committee of the international Federation of Horseracing Authorities Chairman.
The Regulatory Committee consist of eight committees, starting from the advisory council, International Movement of horse, International Grading and Race Planning Advisory, technical Advisory, Horse Welfare, World Ranking Supervisory, International Conf.
for safety health and welfare of jockeys.
In 2004 the very first World Thoroughbred Ranking, was published by declaring stallion Ghostzapper as the highest ranked thoroughbred at 130.
In 2005 French stallion Hurricane Run, was leading with the rankings at 130, gave a hit in the Prix de I’Arc de Triomphe.
American Thoroughbred, Invasor at 129 was leading the ranking list in the year 2006, in 2007 Manduro of Germany, at 131 was declared as the high scorer.
Curlin of America, and New Approach an Irish stallion, shared the same position at 130 in 2008. Sea The Star Irish stallion, gave a hit in the Irish Champion Stakes, he was leading the rankings in 2009.
Great Britain’s Haribinger, who was the winner of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, was at the top in rankings at 135 in the year 2010. Frankel is the Sussex Stakes winner in 2011, he is leading the ranking list this year at 135.
