  1. If you want fairly simple rule sets, try "Axis & Allies" or "Memoir '44."  "Tide of Iron" is a little more complex, but still relatively easy to pick up.  All of the above are self-contained games, no need to provide miniatures.

If you already have miniatures and are looking for a usable rule set, take a look at "Troops, Weapons and Tactics" ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/29309 ), "I Ain't Been Shot, Mum!" ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/22029 ), and "Spearhead" ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/10916 )

    Happy gaming!

  2. Axis & Allies, Memoir 44', and Tide of Iron are actually WWII boardgames.

There are many types of MINIATURE games.  The one that I use for WWII is Battlegroundwwii, originally by Easy Eight.  The current distributor is Pacific Sky Games.  They have their own rule set also.
