Bobby Fischer 1943-2008

He just died not long ago and it would have been good to see him play. Hope that helps.

Garry Kasporav would have my vote if hadn't retired recently.

Viswanathan Anad of India is the current world champion.

But I would say the American Gata Kamsky due to his recent victory in the World Chess Cup, and because both Vladmir Kramnik and Veselin Topolov have struggled since the 2006 World Championship.
