World champion Kelly Slater secures 9 out of 10 in the single-wave at Rio de Janeiro – Surfing News
Ten times world champion, Kelly Slater of the United States has secured nine marks out of ten in the single-wave category of the sixth heat of the first round of the 2011 Billabong Rio Pro, held at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 17.
Overall, he captured 15.17 points out of 20 in the sixth heat. Meanwhile, Julian Wilson of Australia took the second place with a total score of 14.37 and Peterson Crisanto of Brazil wound up third with a score of 3.84, in the following heat.
Salter said, “That 9 felt good. I went down to grab my jersey and there was some confusion. By the time I got out, the heat had already started and Julian got that first one. It wasn’t a good start. I knew there were going to be some good ones and I just
had to be patient. That one good wave actually let me bottom turn and hit the lip, most of the waves were soft and had a lot of horizontals.”
The last year’s runner-up in the Billabong Pro claimed that several goofy footers will be very robust and challenging to strike at the left-hander of Arpoador and mentioned that these natural footers will need to be specifically selective in their wave choice
at the event.
Kelly Slater is a renowned surfer from the USA. The World Number One surfer has the honour of winning the ASP World Tour for ten times, from 1992-2010. His most favourite waves are Kirra and Pipe, whereas, Airs and barrels are his hot favourite manoeuvres.
When it comes to speed, he is very fast, furious and acrobatic in his overall surfing styles. That is why Kelly is known to be one of the best performers in the competitive surfing heats in the world today.
Meanwhile, Patrick Gudauskas of the US has won the fifth heat with a captivating score of 8.13 out of 10. Jordy Smith placed second with a score of 8.07, while Igor Morais of Brazil finished third with a total score of 6.34 in the following heat.
