World champion Williams makes it to US Olympic team
The United States recently held trials for athletics team that would be a part of the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games. In the trail for the high jump event, Jesse Williams narrowly missed not being selected for the Games that are scheduled to start from July 27, 2012.
Williams, who is the world champion in high jumping, has now officially been made a part of the US team to the Olympic Games. However, he did not finish in the top three at the trials as he came at number four.
It had been decided that the top three position holders of the trial would be sent to the London 2012 Olympic Games but one of the athletes who was a position holder could not accomplish the Olympic ‘A’ standard and therefore had to be dropped off the list. As a result, Williams was able to enter the US Olympic team.
The other high jump athletes who were able to secure spots in the US Olympic trials for high jump were Jamie Nieto having secured the first position while the second place went to Erik Kynard with Nick Ross securing the third position. It was Ross who could not make it to the US Olympic team and had to make way for Williams instead.
Williams had the following comments to make to express his delight at the win and the qualification, “For me not to be on the team would be a disaster. It almost didn’t happen for me.”
On the other hand, Nick Symmonds was able to qualify easily for the Olympics team by coming at first place in the 800 metre race event. In the process of qualifying for the US Olympic team, Symmonds has won himself the fifth consecutive US title of the 800 metre race event.
On the women’s side of the 800 metre race, it was Alysia Montano who secured the top spot to get into the Olympic Games.  Montano expressed herself at the Olympics qualification by making the following statements, “I don’t want to go to the Games for the Olympic experience. I want a spot on the podium. I want to win.”
