World championships: Team USA enjoy rare win over Team Canada - NHL News
It was not the result that Team Canada had wanted from the game against Team USA on Saturday, May 05, but apparently they do not have any answer to their unexpected and rueful loss.
Both teams were up against each other for the 42nd time, in the ongoing 2012 World Ice Hockey Championships, and the game happened to be the fourth loss for Team Canada to their US rivals.
However, the timing and the way Team Canada let the game slip through their hands in the power-play, after ending the regulation with scores tied, 4-4, is more disappointing than the result itself.
It was rather an awkward moment for Team Canada’s John Tavares, who happened to be the player of the game and had to accept the award amid disappointments and discontent.
He said:
“It was a tough way to finish. With the big ice, having a 4-on-3 power play is a big advantage and they took advantage of it.”
He added:
“It’s part of the adjustment here. The glass here isn’t tall. I knew there wasn’t much time left, but you’re always cautious and you’re just trying to get the puck out of play. I just reacted. I was hoping they didn’t see it.”
Although a win has always been a rare development for Americans whenever they are up against their rivals from across the border, Saturday’s victory was more welcome for the team.
Team USA entered into the weekend’s game with one win as they had defeated France in the opening tie of the tournament with the wider margin of 7-2 goals.
Team Canada also came with the same record. They had beaten Slovakia in their opening game.
Apart from Canada and the US, Russia, Germany and other European teams are taking part in the championships, being held in Sweden and Finland, from Friday, May 04.
Team US is now ahead of Team Canada on the points table but still there are many games left for both sides to play, and the final scorecard is certainly going to fluctuate as the event progresses.
