1. Mayan Calendar

The first mob to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans, a bloodthirsty race that were good at two things:

Building highly accurate astrological equipment out of stone and

Sacrificing Virgins.

Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the Earth will end on December 21, 2012. Given that they were pretty close to the mark with the lunar cycle, it's likely they've got the end of the world right as well.

2. Sun Storms

Solar experts from around the world monitoring the sun have made a startling discovery: our sun is in a bit of strife. The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic, and it's supposed to be in the middle of a period of relative stability. However, recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012

3. The Atom Smasher

Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. However, the mega-gadget has caused serious concern, with some scientists suggesting that it's properly even a bad idea to turn it on in the first place. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a basketball.

4. The Bible says...

If having scientists warning us about the end of the world isn't bad enough, religious folks are getting in on the act aswell. Interpretations of the Christian Bible reveal that the date for Armageddon, the final battle between Good an Evil, has been set down for 2012. The I Ching, also known as the Chinese book of Changes, says the same thing, as do various sections of the Hindu teachings.

5. Super Volcano

Yellowstone National Park in the United States is famous for its thermal springs and Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, and geological experts are beginning to get nervous sweats. The Yellowstone volcano has a pattern of erupting every 650,000 years or so, and we're many years overdue for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last up to 15,000 years. The pressure under the Yellowstone is building steadily, and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date for the big bang.

6. The Physicists

This one's case of bog-simple maths mathematics. Physicists at Berekely Uni have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99 percent- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.

7. Slip-Slop-Slap-BANG!

We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that sheilds us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every 750,000 years or so - and right now we're about 30,000 years overdue. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

  1. I hope not. I have 2011 in the office pool.

  2. This list has appeared on YA a few times before and is obviously cut and pasted from a crank website. As soon as I see "...the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days" instead of 29.53020 days, I realise that we are dealing with people who can't recognise a 1000% error in a basic astronomical period, so I know the rest of the list can be dismissed as nonsense.

If the physicists at Berkeley (not Berekely, incidentally) can predict random events with 99% accuracy, they should get across to Las Vegas and make some money.

  3. No, I don't think the world is going to end in 2012.  People have been making predictions like this since ancient times and nothing comes of them.

The Jehovah's Witnesses predicted the Day of Judgement several times during the 20th century and were (pretty obviously!) wrong, and remember all the nonsense about Nostradamus's predictions and the disasters which were supposed to happen at the Millenium.

It's true that the Mayan Long Count Calendar does predict an 'end of the world' for 2012, but that's not in a literal sense.  It's tied up with their mythology about death, rebirth and renewal, which includes the idea that there have been several previous worlds which have existed and been destroyed at the end of earlier cycles of time.  Perhaps it's better to think of the end of this cycle in 2012 as a sort of 're-set' and the start of a new era.

As far the sunstorms, magnetic fields, the CERN accelerator and the rest, these are all theoretical risks to the earth, and it's just as likely that one of them could happen some time other than 2012.  Personally, I'd be more worried about the chances of Iran and Israel lobbing a few nuclear missiles at each other...

  4. No. Its not science based. There is no evidence.

The end of the world has been predicted thousands of times through the centuries.....all incorrectly.

  5. I can't wait until the year 2013 comes lol.

Well, it seems like all of the theories above seem very logical, so I can't really say anything to disprove those theories.  The only thing that crosses my mind is the religious theories.  I am a Christian and in the bible is says that we will not know the time when Jesus comes down to earth for his second coming, so that might the only theory I can disprove right now.  Very interesting question.

  6. The world is not ending in 2012.

  7. 1.  No they didn't.  The Mayan calendar is cyclical.  That's when it starts over.

    2.  This has happened every 11 years for the last 5 billion years.

    3.  We have many other particle accelerators.  Nothing is happening in this one that's not happening in our atmosphere every second.

    4.  The bible is wrong about most things.  Next.

    5.  No one knows when it's going off.  But it's not going to be the end of the world when it does.  Just the end of Wyoming.

    6.  You're just making stuff up now.  I know many people in the Berkeley physics dept, and they'll tell you that's a load of c**p.

    7.  There's no regularity to when they swap.  We're certainly not 'overdue'.

  8. 2012 is just the revealing of the 'antichrist' at the middle of what Jews and Christians call the Tribulation. All things must come and go. If you believe or not, that is up to you.

Things to look for to prove it to yourself soon:

The fall of America as a power economically and in other ways.

The start of the North American Union.

    Push to one world government.

Push to one world religion where there are "manys ways to God".

    More food shortages and famines.

    More earth quakes.

    More fires.

    Strange and severe weather.

Push for USA and Israel to attack Iran which will start WW3-the atomic war to end all wars. (If you think China, Russia, and the Muslim world would just sit back, you are sadly mistaken and a fool!)

Temporary and unheard of "peace in the middle east".

Rise of a miraculous and awe inspiring world leader later to turn world dictator.

    Major spiritual awakenings.

    Rise of Islamic fanaticism.

Toleration of everything but Jews and Christians.

    Rise in wickedness and corruption.

Implementation of Project Bluebeam (be ready to hear more and more 'alien talk'... watch your local skies for the show!)

Trying to make people first accept the REAL ID card and then right after forcibly implant people with RFID chips (google: 'Verichip Corp').

2012 has been the end of this Age prophecy of many religions, cultures, and people all through the world.

Christians and Messianic Jews look forward to this as it means they will soon join their Messianic Saviour in the Millennial Kingdom of the next Age and their Heavenly Father later as "Children of Light".

Research all these things FOR YOURSELF!

  9. Why worry about it?  The incompetence of government and the greed of big money interests will do us in long before 2012.  We have finally reached a capacity to irreparably damage our environment on a global scale, and yet we aren't smart enough to stop doing it.  Once we reach the tipping point (if we haven't already) the destructive processes will feed themselves and we'll be toast.  Enjoy.

  10. you didn't have to post all that just to 'see what we thought'.. you're doing your part to keep the danged stuff circulating!!... stop it!... it's hogwash and it's scaring the young ones.....

  11. I can say with CERTAINTY it will not end and I defy anyone to prove me wrong.

  12. 1. The mayan did not predict the end their according to them it is a time of enlightment. Do you think the world is going to end every dec.31..I doubt it. We should not live our lives around a what is it a 3000 year old barbaric culture. where when the planets moved they thought the gods were talking to them come on we no better now.

2.This is false the sun is in a solar minimum right now there has been no solar storms for quite a while now...solar maximum should reach its peak in 2011 or 2012 which is normal it occurs every 11 years roughly. you can check out spaceweather.com.

3.The atom smasher is to be turned on in about 27days and run at full and start experiments a few months later so proably late nov. not 2012.

    4. You can interpret the bible to say what you what now bible thumpers are saying may 2011 that if you follow the bibles time line then that month is the end and they are just as full of sh..!

5.No geoligsts havent...we cannot predict when a volcano is going to erupt all we can do is watch for increased siesmic activity. One erupted yesterday in hawii with virtually no warning....you can check out usgs.gov

6.I have not even heard about the berkley thing no one can predict the "end" by just some number crunching and put a date on it.

    7. When our magnetic poles shift our fields do not go away they just become more complicated and may even be stronger before eventually straighting theirselves out.

So all in all the fearmongers have no grounds to stand on you can easily debunk almost everything they say  and the things that could occur have always been possible to do us damage and always will be long after 2012.

  13. *drink*

  14. No I don't beleieve this, ignore the psuedoscience and stick to hard facts.

There have always been myths about the end of the earth, if they were right, then the earth would have ended hundreds of times by now

also, the Yellowstone caldera may cause lots of damage but it won't destroy the earth, or humanity

The poles have shifted thousands of times over the years, yet there is still life, don't get worked up about it

the bible says the earth is flat, dont  think its correct on the enddays either and that the sun revolves around the earth ( it is in the Book of Job)

There have been numerous catastrophes already on earth, including at least 5 previous mass extinctions, yet life managed to survive each one . The earth is not coming to an end

however, I must admit, I don't know enough about the atom smasher to comment about it.

  15. The world isn't going to end, Doomsday is a ridiculous idea that has no bearing in reality.  The world is only going to end when our fat red giant sun swallows us in 5.4 billion years.  Sleep easy.

  16. Ok well first of all your question's wrong you said "World ending" however it would just be all life ending say these supposed events where to happen.

Second if you go google type in en of the world god knows how many dooms dayers have written article's of the planets aligning a black hole exploding a genetic mutation killing us all. Its all bull**** Its because these silly people take satisfaction in terrorizing people into beleiving theres no hope and were all dead! I suppose you could call them cyber terrorists If you really want to tagg them lol. But these are logical( Well most of them) thoughts but unfortunatley however much they say end of the world they have absolutley NO PROOF whatsoever that its ever ever going tto happen
