World record set as 311 skateboarders rally at etnies Skatepark on Go Skateboarding Day
Shoe giant etnies made history on this year’s Go Skateboarding Day by holding the largest skateboard lesson that was attended by hundreds at its Skatepark of Lake Forest in Southern California, America.
Responding to the call of etnies and Skatepark staff who stressed they required at least 250 participants to attend the event in order to qualify for an official world record attempt, 311 skateboarders from around the nation rallied at the park, making the
number game fall completely in their favour.
Guinness will be reviewing the footage of the event before ratifying the world record this summer.
Skatepark co-ordinator Nick Gates, along with a hand from etnies CEO Pierre-Andre Senizergues, organised the event in honour of the eight-year-old local skater Thomas Johnson who had succumbed to his battle against cancer in 2012. The hundreds of skaters
rallied at etnies Skatepark wore his favourite orange-coloured t-shirts to show their solidarity with Team Thomas.
Both Gates and Senizergues also headed a 30-minute skateboarding crash course, teaching tricks of the trade and Skatepark etiquette to their 311 students of all ages and levels.
“Today was not only about learning a lesson in skateboarding and setting a record, it was also learning about inspiration,” Senizergues conceded after the event. “Skateboarding was Thomas Johnson’s inspiration to stay active and happy when he was ill and
his positive persistence has inspired the hundreds of skateboarders that came out today. As skateboarders, we need to give back and inspire others who skate or want to skate. Thomas’ memory did that for us and helped us to set the Guinness World Record!”
The etnies Skatepark event also featured an amateur best trick contest as well as free food. The Skatepark coordinator later revealed that the gathering not only set up a world record, but also served to raise awareness and about $500 that were donated to
the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Go Skateboarding Day is an official skateboarding holiday celebrated around the globe by skaters and non-skaters to take a break from their routine work and completely commit to the four-wheel sport on the 21st of June every year.
