World record setting Big Jim is thought to do well as a 3-year-old
The 2010 2-year-old Pacing Colt of The Year, Big Jim has a wonderful pedigree and he is one of the best colts around.
He has not been in the spotlight recently, but last year Big Jim was one of the top names, and in the 2011 season, he would like to repeat his 2020 performances as a 3-year-old.
Hollywood Park, as of yet, has no graded stakes races for 3-year-olds. However, Del Mar is catering to three-year-olds by holding the $150,000 La Jolla Handicap on August 13, 2011, and the $250,000 Del Mar Derby in September.
Big Jim’s connections would be hoping that the colt will live up to his pedigree’s remarkable performance standards and perform well on turf.
Big Jim is eyeing the richest event restricted to Jersey based horses, the $ 400,000 Anthony Abbatiello New Jersey Classic.
The colt has been installed as the 8 to 5 morning line favourite to win the race, in a draw held on 23 May, 2011, and the race will be held at the Meadowlands racecourse.
Out of ten starts, Big Jim has gone on to win six and as a sophomore, he kicked things off with a win last weekend under jockey, Phil Hudon, who praised the colt by saying, “He was well in hand; I didn't want to rev him up too much late. I was just sitting
on him. He finished up good and I think he'll have a good year."
The highly favoured Big Jim did well in his debut season as he teamed up with Phil Hudion for many memorable wins, including a world record in the Governor’s Cup with a time of 1 minute and 49 seconds, along with a Breeders’ Cup win on his resume as a juvenile
as well.
Big Jim is owned by Carr, who intends to race him in the $1 million Meadowlands Pace. Meadowlands Pace is to take place on July 16, 2011.
His excellent form and the ability to win races have also induced his owner to race Big Jim in the Red Mile where the owner believes he will beat Somebeachsomewhere’s record of 1 minute and 46 seconds.
Carr was quoted saying, “One of my ambitions with this horse is that he is the fastest 3-year-old, I think given the right conditions, he can be. We did not test the waters with him as a 2-year-old. The last race [Governor’s Cup], we just let him go in
the stretch, but prior to that, we just raced him fast enough to win”.
