  1. I wouldn't mind only three venues if two of them weren't in London. Ok have either The Oval or Lord's but not both! I also hate the fact, particularly with more venues these days, that Lords gets two tests a summer and that The Oval is never the ground to miss out when Edgbaston, Old Trafford, Trent Bridge, Headingley... all have.

  2. As male and female cups are being held togather, venues have been short listed. English cricket will definitely flourish as the yongsters will see playing top world class players in front of them.

  3. Its going to be great. a short 20-20 internatinal world cup is going to be great.

However its a bit unfair that two venues are being played in london. Maybe there thinking of the short distance between venues for players.

  4. it would be better

  5. Well to answer the second part of the question, they have probably done it that way so as to lessen the amount of travelling players must do. Plus London is a top tourist attraction with its amounts of hotels, restaurants, public transport (and so on) so it is a good idea to have a large number of tourists in a city which can handle it. But I do believe it is unfair for the people who live further up north who will either miss out or have to travel a long way to see the games.

However, unless I'm mistaken, this is entirely an ICC decision. One of the few things we can't blame the ECB for!!  :)

  6. I think it will do a lot for women's cricket that's for sure. Not just in this country but all over the world, especially as they're hosting it as a precursor to the men's event. The women will get a much wider audience and will be able to establish, build and promote the game to a much greater degree and that can only be a good thing. The women's game has a much greater uptake than the men's game in the UK at the moment and it's great that people are finally taking notice of this with initiatives such as this one.

As for the games only being played at 3 venues I think it's for two reasons. One is that it lessens the amount of travel that players have to undertake and as this is a tournament that lasts only a few weeks it would be unproductive to spread it all over the country.

The second reason is money. Games at The Oval and Lord's cost far more to get into than at Trent Bridge, Bristol, or Old Trafford (for example) even at 20/20 level. And the ECB are always looking to line it's pockets one way or the other.

  7. ICC World Twenty20 cricket tournament  willl be held in June 2009 in England..

The 2009 event sees both the men’s and women’s tournament integrated for the first time. The men’s tournament format consists of 12 teams, played across three venues – Lord’s, Trent Bridge and The Oval.

The women’s tournament consists of eight teams with the group stage games hosted at Taunton. The semi-final days hosted at Trent Bridge and The Oval and the finals day hosted at Lord’s will bring the two tournaments together with the men’s matches following the women’s match on each match-day.

A key feature of the 2009 event is that the majority of match-days will include two games showcasing four different teams. This double-header format allows spectators to view two games for the price of one match-day ticket.

  8. The World Twenty20 Cup that was held in South Africa last year was a tremendous success. Only 3 venues were used, and on most days at least 2 games were played. It led to the birth of the IPL and ICL, firstly because India won the Cup, but also because it attracted a newer audience to the game, and the money-men realised that cricket had a 'product' they could finally sell, that would appeal to more than those actually interested in it.

It will benefit English cricket as the cash injection it will bring will help to swell the coffers.

Only 3 venues are being used to cut down on travelling. The tournament would last so much longer if teams were travelling the length and breadth of the country (admittedly England is tiny compared to say, Australia, but anyone who has caught a train here will know what a nightmare travelling can be!)

The only gripe I have is that 2 of the grounds are in London. The North of England has been completely missed out. Still, old Trafford does need some serious redevelopment work. Perhaps they will stage it the next time this tournament comes to our shores.
