World’s top ranked, Andrea Cassara, grabs silver in the 2011 European Fencing Championships
The day two of the 2011 European Fencing Championship, Sheffield was a bash for the Blue fencers as the World’s Top Ranked Italian Foil Fencer, Andrea Cassara, won the silver medal on the second day of the European Fencing Championships on July 14.
Not only Cassara won the silver medal in the competition, but the gold and silver medals were also snatched by the Blue. The Italian George Avola captured the gold medal of the day, while Andrea Baldini achieved bronze medal in the Men’s Foil Individual
discipline.
Baldini and Cassara started their day with the pool matches where they both won five victories with just one loss in the pool. No automatic bye was given to both of Blues and they started their direct elimination round with the table of 64. Another Blue
Fencer, Valerio Aspromonte, also started with the table of 64 as he got four wins and two losses in the Pool Matches.
Baldini beat Denmark’s Jorgensen with the score of 15-6, Cassara defeated Spain’s Llavador with 15-11 touches, while Aspromonte defeated Austrian Hinterseer with a close score of 15-12 touches. Aspromonte was dropped in the table of 32 because he lost his
direct elimination bout from Polish Rajski with three point’s loss in the total 15 touches. Three Blues, Cassara, Avola and Baldini and a Russian Alexey Cheremisinov won their quarter-final bouts and advanced to the semi-final round.
The semi-final bout of Avola was set against Alexey, while Cassara and Baldini faced each other for qualifying to the play-off bout. There were Cassara and Avola who successfully qualified for the title round after beating their opponents. Cassara could
not stand against his team-mate fencer, Avola, and lost his final bout from 15-14 touches. He was able to get the second place in the competition with a silver medal.
Avola captured the gold medal, while Baldini and Alexey were awarded the bronze medals of the Foil events. Cassara is still leading the World Ranking, while Avola will also have the big change in his place due to that grand victory in the 2011 European Fencing
Championships.
