  1. Their skin holds it together.

  2. Slugs are Mollusks, and are therefore related to snails, clams, and octopus.  Worms are a much lower form of animal within their own classification.

Neither of these animals have internal (mammals) or external (insects) skeletons to support their bodies.  Therefore they have extreme flexibility and can bend over backwards and fit through very tiny spaces related to their size.  This gives them an advantage in enabling them to fit into specific niches in their environment, those that cannot be inhabited by the higher forms of animals.  This is WHY they exist in the first place.  Their bodies are supported by the musculature under the skin.  For their size, they have very powerful muscles which help them dig and crawl "through" the ground, or negotiate plants, etc..  Also, the skin itself is very tough, like that in slugs.  Worms and slugs MUST keep themselves moist though, or they will dry out.  Worms spend most of their time in wet or moist surroundings, while slugs have slime all over them which helps prevent evaporation of the bodily fluids.  In most cases, this slime is NOT readily water soluble, therefore it does not wash away in the rain.

  3. Their bodies are made up of complex muscles that hold their form and allow them to move and slink along.

  4. they have a hydrostatic skeleton - basically they are filled with fluid that moves around to fill the parts where their muscles are relaxed when they squeeze it out of another part - so a worm can squeeze itself skinny using circular muscles or use longitudinal muscles to squeeze itself fat.

  5. Worm's and slugs are made up of on big muscle! Slugs have one foot on there underside to help them move.

  6. because maybe its their muscles, this is just a guess
