Question:

Worms that are safe for bearded dragons to eat?

Hello,

I have a one year old bearded dragon. He is a happy and healthy lizard who enjoys crickets. I am no reptile expert but I personally believe that a animal of any kind cannot get all it's nutrients, vitamains and calcium from one specific food. So I would like to change his diet from brown crickets +veggies, to brown crickets + veggies + worms.

Would this be a good idea ?

If so,

What worms do bearded dragons enjoy ?

I also REFUSE to cut the head off a ANY worm, as I find this very stomache-turning.

If possible could an EXPERIENCED reptile keeper tell me all the LIVE food's which bearded dragons will eat.

Thank you So Much

  1. meal worms

wax worms..ocassionally..these are more of a treat...they will make them fat!

    super worms

and when they get big enough you can offer them mice pinkies...maybe once a month.

You can usually find all these worms at your local pet store they come in cups and you keep them in the fridge until your ready to feed....take them out wait till they start moving...and feed them...trust me your beardie will thank you...

also you mentioned veggies but no fruit...

beardies like strawberries..most will eat bananas, yellow squash, peaches....all cut into small pieces of course....and make sure you are feeding a variety of greens ...

collard greens, mustard greens, red leaf and green leaf lettuce and romaine....all the dark green and reds are high in nutrients...green beans, carrots, all this stuff is good for them.....if you have any more questions email me.

  2. My bearded dragon used to eat Crickets ( i had to put them in the fridge first to slow them down so he could catch them)

    Wax worms (a particular fav)

    Meal worms

and some dried food specially formulated for BD's.

Also Kale, mashed raw carrot, (ours used to ear apples as well)

Just watch out for those worms (Wax worms i think) Some escaped from his cage and we couldnt find them for ages, then after a legnth of time they turn into massive black beetles.... horrid!!

Occasionally he used to eat pinkies (mice) but not often it was more a treat.

One thing i always use to watch for was that his crickets were smallish, i heard that dragons can choke on large crickets.

I never used to cut the heads off any worms.

Even if he only eats something that moves still offer a good selection of foods to him.

you can get much information in this website, If you will check anyone blue link in website.

  4. Meal worms are very healthy and can be provided as a stable diet, but they must be no bigger than the space between a bearded dragon's eyes, as the have a hard exoskeleton shell which could cause impaction if they are bigger. This only applies to meal worms and worms with hard exoskeletons though, other worms without hard shells can be bigger.

Silkworms, butterworms, and phoenix worms are also very healthy, and can be given regularly. They are much rarer to find and harder to keep though, you can only really find them at reptile shows, online, and at certain 'mom and dad' reptile stores.

Wax worms and super worms are a good treat, but should only be given occasionally (they are fatty foods).

  5. Mealworms chewing through their stomach is a myth. I wouldn't give them too many though because they can cause impaction from their hard exo-skeletons. You can give your beardie wax worms as a treat only since they are very fatty, but it's like candy to your beardie. You can give him a little bit of mealworms occassionally if you want.

Also, do not feed your beardie any mammals. No mice, pinkies, etc. It's bad for them and it contrdicts the rule to never feed your dragon anything bigger than the space between it's eyes.

  6. wax worms

    super worms

    goliath worms

    butter worms

    meal worms

    silk worms

earthworms (if from a clean source-vet told me about it) -although most of the lizards I have don't like them.

My Jibblet plays a fetch type game with the worms, I toss it away from him on the floor, he notices and runs to eat it. It's cute.

  7. You are right, variety is always best!

Since he is a year old, there are several types of worms available as staple foods, things he can eat everyday.  These include silkworms, phoenix worms, hornworms, and superworms.

He can also eat some worms that are only good as treats (low nutrition worms, high chitin worms, and fatty worms, in other words).  These include meal worms, wax worms, and butter worms.

You can find phoenix worms, meal worms, and wax worms at many stores.  For the others, you are more likely to find them online.  www.mulberryfarms.com has many of the types I just mentioned.  They also have care sheets for each one, so you can find out how to maintain them while he is waiting to eat all of them.

And here's an article called, "The Best Insects for Bearded Dragons and Why", that I think you may find interesting.  http://www.reptilerooms.com/forums/index...

  8. I have read multiple books and bearded dragons liek mealworms which can be bought at local pet stores( they come frozen so you just put them in a dish and in the tank and they thaw. Also available at pet stores are waxworms. There liek fat mealworms. If you hand ffed 1 waxworm every 3-4 days then it will love you because there so full of nutrient. Watch out though because they bite.(not mealworms just waxworms)
