The former defender admits Borussia Dortmund’s exit from Europe could be a blessing in disguise for them at the end of the season.
Borussia Dortmund have carried on their brilliant form form last season and are neck-to-neck with Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title. They are in second place on the league standings table with 34 points from the 17 games played and are three points behind Munich giants, Bayern Munich.
However, the German champions have once again been disappointing in Europe and have been knocked-out of the UEFA Champions League after the group stage. Jurgen Klopp’s side garnered only four points from the six games played and ended bottom of the table, hence, not even qualifying for a place in the UEFA Europa League.
Worns, who played 240 league games for Borussia Dortmund in his nine years at the club, claimed that the side’s exit from Europe’s premier club competition could be a blessing in disguise as the main focus would be on Bundesliga. He insisted that the European competitions are very tiring and take a lot of energy.
“Yes, it could improve their prospects in the Bundesliga. The Champions League is very draining, both physically and mentally. Dortmund got off to a shaky start in the Bundesliga, but the team are well back in the groove now,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
The former German international added that his former side has a very good chance of winning the competition as they will completely focus on one major competition. On the other hand, rivals Bayern Munich have to do a lot of travelling as they take on Swiss side http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079 in the Champions League.
Worns added that the Borussians were unlucky in the competition as the displays were impressive.
“They played well in the Champions League too, with the exception of the game at Olympiacos, but unfortunately the results didn't go their way. I think Borussia Dortmund have a real chance of retaining their title, even if FC Bayern remain the favourites,” he concluded.
Borussia Dortmund will travel to Hamburg SV this Sunday, in search of their 11th win of the season.
