i've lost countless hours of sleep due to this end of the world c**p about the lhc producing black holes

how long will it be on?

if they produce many mini black holes wont one suck up another and create one huge one?

Is it going to end the world?

why do we need to do this and why on PLANET EARTH? why not on mars.. i just believe its not worth it..risking the whole planet for some science that could atleast be some where else..

  1. for some reason i belive that the black holes can't be created due to fact that black holes were created as a rip in space physics as the big bang occurred while only a fraction of of that power is being tested, also tiny black holes would burn out there singularity almost instantly, the big bang could of been created through great pressure causing more like the fusion of billions & trillion & quadrillions of atoms at once instead of smashing a few together at almost the speed of light, how did the big bang occur if space is an infinite amount of space how did these atoms collide at the speed of light, why don't we still witness it happening today

  2. Just read this........and for god sakes!!!....get some sleep!!!!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080628/ap_o...

  3. particle accelerators have been around since 1937.... we've been using them for AGES!!.... this is just a new , bigger one....all the same safeguards are in place with this one as were in place with all the others.... there's not been a problem in all this time, so why worry now?... give the science guys the benefit of the doubt, willya?... they're smart fellers!!!....

    quit worrying..... life goes on.....

  4. this is nothing new. we've been creating microscopic black holes for decades... the ones produced in this machine aren't going to be very different. these black holes aren't the supermassive ones that suck in stars and planets. they are about the same size of an atom... maybe a bit bigger. they are so small, that we can't even see them with a normal biological microscope. an electron microscope has to be used to "see" them, but they are invisible so whats the point?

these micrscopic black holes are made, and an instant later, they disapear because the rip in space time is mended almost imediatly. a black hole has to be very big... bigger than jupiter, in order to suck up an object the size of the earth. these mini black holes are artificial, and don't have the exact same properties as the black holes created in the natural universe.

and if 1000 of these mini black holes combined, nothing big would happen. they might attract a couple of atoms, but they won't suck them in. and in less than a milisecond, they will disapear. the entire point of this exersize is to detect the certain properties (in specific radiation) of black holes. it is used to prove that black holes can be formed in a multitude of ways, and that black holes aren't always that big.

the name "black hole" is really is misnomer. there is no color to them. they are invisible. they only way we detect them when we look at stars or other celestial bodies orbiting invisible objects, or using satelites to detect the radiation emited by these black holes. and the hole part is not exactly accurate. it isn't a literal hole in space time, its just a rip.

black holes don't always suck things in. thats what they are best known for. they are actually just rips in space time. when they are massive, like the one the center of our galaxy, they attract a lot of things because they are very massive. black holes the size of a football don't do much. they're just there, and they eventually go away.

we want to know how exactly they are formed, and how exactly they are able to go away in some cases. its a simple science experiment, and does not threaten the world. its pretty much a routine operation to create such black holes.

it is not going to end the world. we experience forces here on earth that are more powerful than those created by the LHC.

we aren't playing around and threatening earth. we've made hundreds of these things, and performed the same operations numerous times. so why are we hearing about it now? simple. publicity. yahoo knows people think the world is going to end in 2012, or soon. the apocolyptic stuff is at an all time high. yahoo, and other news agencies want to catch people's attention. i'm ashamed of yahoo for advertising this c**p, but thats another problem. they are emphesizing this perticular release because of people thinking the world is going to end soon. its the best way to attract attention, and they are confusing millions of people while they do it.

we wouldn't think about doing it on mars. it costs tons just to make this on earth. imagine the cost of putting this machine on a whole different planet! there's no way we would even think about it.

we've tested the LHC back in 2003 before people even knew about it being built. we performed the same experiments we are going to be performing in a couple months when it is turned on for practice runs. we've been doing this for decades... nothing has changed. and if anyone was going to worry about this, don't you think the astrophysicists, such as me, would put an end to it before it started? we would know best. i know that nothing bad is going to happen.

so don't loose sleep over it. rest asured, with my word. nothing bad is going to happen as a result of the LHC. it is an over publisized rumor that is not true at all. so don't worry. if this problem still continues to affect you, you might want to consider seeing a therapist. there is nothing to be ashamed of. i've gone to a therapist just to get some thoughts out of my mind. i went there before college when i had no idea what i was going to do with my life, and i turned out fine. if it is affecting you so much to the point your loosing sleep, then it would be a good idea to see a mental profesional. there is nothing to be ashamed of, its just a friendly sugestion. :)

  5. The LHC WILL destroy the Earth by producing black holes. However, the black holes created will exist "out of phase" with our reality. Every time they turn it on, it will create another black hole, and thus make the previous one larger.

These black holes will not start to consume regular matter until they have reached a sort of "critical mass".

According to the scheduled experiments from LHC, that critical mass will happen late November in 2012. It will take about a month or so after that for the black hole re re-phase and begin sucking in matter at an exponential rate.

  6. No I am not worried.

Black holes DO NOT suck in everything around them

Why don;t you read the LHC website stuff on safety issues - it is not difficult to understand:

    http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/en/LHC/...

    And here's something to ponder...

If the sun was replaced by a 1 solar mass black hole, the Earth would not suddenly be sucked in. As long as the mass is the same, the earth would continue to orbit as usual(the lack of sunlight would present us with a few problems tho')

  7. They are humans too, and must have taken enough precautions. Wait & see.

  8. What I lose sleep over is how many people aren't willing to research these kinds of things for themselves, but would rather worry needlessly over things that won't happen.

There are a number of particle accelerators that have been operating on Earth for decades - LHC is just a more powerful one than the others.  It will be in operation for years (just like the others that have been around since the 1970s').

Any black holes they MIGHT produce will be microscopic in size and mass, and as such will evaporate from Hawking Radiation very quickly.

An independent group of scientists (not connected with LHC) have been studying and analysing the risks for years - reports in 2003 (and an update in 2008) state there is no risk to Earth.  If you're that concerned, you can read their report.
