Question:

Worried about my new baby Guinea pig?

My piggy(got him 3 days ago) has a little bit of fur missing below his ear, I called PetSmart(where i purchased him) and asked one of the employes about it. She said it could be because he's stressed from moving from place to place and to keep an eye on him, but since I've been hearing a lot of things about PetsMart's animals being sick I'm starting to get parinoid..

  1. all guinea pigs i think have little bald spots there

it's when they have it on their bodies you should be worried as then it's

mites and buggi things and your guineapig needs a anti buggi bath

an ilness and the vet is needed

    or

old age which isn't possible in a baby :)

  2. don't worry they all have it, i find that they like it if you massage it there :)

  3. Many guinea pigs have a bald spot right underneath/behind their ears.  Our guinea pig, which is full grown, has these spots behind both of his ears.  I would keep your eye on him and make sure that he is eating and not acting overly lethargic.  As long as he's not exhibiting any other symptoms, I wouldn't worry about it for now, just keep your eye on him.  If your still very concerned, then you could see if there is an exotic vet in the area that would see him for a quick check-up.

  4. 2 of my three guinea pigs dont have fur behind their ears. i was never worried about it and one of them that has it is 6 years old and is very healthy. i got my guinea pigs at petsmart also. if your really worried, you can take it to the vet

  5. Well its Okay to not have the fur right behind their ears. Both of mine don't ever since I got them.

I heard petsmart treating their animals bad and it sounds like they are giving a "universal" excuse for everything. "stress".. ah..

But if the guinea pig is missing hair anywhere else on the body like side or tummy etc then it could be an actual problem. Sometimes thats caused by fungi infections or parasites. If you think the condition is bad, do not hesitate to take him to the vet :)

    Good Luck! :)
