  7. In the cities there is no religious wedding ceremony anymore. Instead, the couple and the guests go to an "evlendirme dairesi" (official marriage bureau) where the bride and the groom say their vows in front of a civil servant and two witnesses, and sign some papers. The guests just sit and watch. The whole thing takes about half an hour. Following that, there is usually an informal ceremony where the guests line up to congratulate the couple.

The "real" wedding takes place in the evening of the official ceremony. This is when everybody dresses up and goes to a fancy reception place (usually a "düğün salonu" - wedding hall, or a hotel ballroom) to eat, drink and dance until the wee hours. The parents of the couple host this party. It is customary for the guests to bring banknotes or gold coins to pin on the bride's and groom's dresses.

  8. smoke alot of hash the night before

  9. I suppose it would depend upon their religion.

I know they pin money on the bride and groom rather than buy presents. They pin so much on that often it'll pay for the wedding!
