  1. Um, i don't know what it is in England, but in the US it's:

    ELEMENTARY

    kindergarten

    1st-6th grade

    MIDDLE SCHOOL

    7th & 8th grade

    HIGH SCHOOL

    9-12th grade.

    A ninth grader is15 or almost 15.

  2. In Britain, the school system works as follows with approx ages:

    Nursery School (age 3/4)

    Primary 1 thru 7 (age 5-11)

    SECONDARY SCHOOL (High School)

    1st year - 6th year

    (age 12-17)

Anyway, to answer your question - counting ONLY Primary and Secondary, a 9th year in Britain would be called 2nd year in Secondary (High School) and would place you (age-wise) with an 8th Grader - only you would already be receiving a high school education!

The reason for the advancement in education in Britain is due to the shorter summer vacation and less and shorter school holidays making for a longer school year.

When I was at school in Scotland (many, MANY years ago), our school day started at 8:50am and continued until 4pm with a 30 minute lunch break, making it a 6hr 40 min day as opposed to the schools locally in the US that operate from 8:40 am - 3:30pm with a 40 minute lunch, making their day only 6 hrs 10 minutes long!!  Thats 2.5 hours more learning a WEEK!!!

  3. Eighth grade.

In the US, the first year of schooling is kindergarten.

First *grade* would be the second year.

Ninth year, therefore, would be eighth grade.

    (:

I think the elementary grading system may differ, depending on where one lives, in the US.

Where I live, elementary school consists of kindergarten through fifth grade.

Middle school is sixth through eighth.

And high school is ninth through twelfth.  Also known as, freshman through senior, respectively.
