  1. It depends upon the TV and the wall mount.  To maximize the compatibility of TVs and wall mounts, a stardard was created called VESA, to ensure that the TV will fit the mount.  If a 40" wall mount is VESA compliant, it will likely only fit up to a 40" VESA compliant TV.  The best way is to Google the model number of the wall mount.

By the way, wall mounting is absolutely safe if it is done according to the instructions.  I have several that are, some mounted in drywall, some in studs, and some in combinations.  You can also mount in cinder blocks, although I haven't done that yet.

  2. If a wall mount is rated only up to 40 inches than you will need to purchase a larger mount.  Wall mounting is safe, but make sure you know what you are doing.  You need to make sure the bracket is secured in to studs in your wall. Find somebody who has done this before or have a professional installer do it.

    Good Luck;)
