Would AmeriCorps be a secure thing to do if there were a major depression?

Could I survive doing this? I actually do want to improve the world by the way.

AmeriCorps is a wonderful program and you can do a lot of good.  Keep in mind, however, that it is basically volunteer work and for a limited time.  You serve for a 9 - 12 month period, which can be renewed for a second term.  But that's it.  You will be paid a VERY small living stipend (about 850/month) and at the end of your service you will receive an education award of $4795 to be used toward your student loans (or future college expenses).  They don't just hand over the cash.

    I served in AmeriCorps in 1997-98 working with at-risk kids in public schools.  It was one of the best experiences of my life and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested.  You will do wonderful work, but you will be very poor.
