I found a c**p load of ram in a random drawer on my computer table. I was wondering if it has to be a special type for it to work on my computer.

I have a dell, windows xp home, service pack 3, 160G harddrive

  1. As everyone else has mentioned, you need a very specific type of ram for every computer.

Try MemoryTen to see what kind of ram you have:

    www.memoryx.com

Then look through your pile and see if any of them match the type MemoryTen tells you.

  2. No

There is a special type of RAM for every kind computer(mostly depends on manufacturers). You can check them on this site www.crucial.com

  3. The RAM that is in your system now needs to match new RAM purchased/installed.

The type needs to match, for example.. PC133 and PC100 will not coincide with each other. However, if you have two or more sticks of one, then your good. The frequency does matter, but not enough to make a noticeable difference to the untrained eye.

  4. NO!!!!

  5. Yes only certain kind will work on your computer. It depends on what type of mother board you have we would need to know the Dell model number in order to tell you what it is compatible with.

  6. Knowing Dell, it is not compatible.  Do you remember what kind of computer the RAM came with and what kind it is?
